Project Eco for Whirlpool

Whirlpool tasked my teammate, Daoxiang Zhang, and me with developing a service design concept utilizing their new technology, which scans items placed in the fridge. Through our design research, including cultural probes with target users, we uncovered several key insights: One> Users are willing to share food with others. Two> Mutual trust between the giver and taker is essential. Three> Many items in the fridge are forgotten and spoil, causing users to feel guilty.

Based on these insights, we brainstormed and developed a new online platform and physical devices that enable people to share their food with friends or those in shared spaces such as schools, workplaces, or apartment complexes. The platform integrates with newly designed containers and public fridges that can store and lock the containers, notifying the recipients when their food is available.

We successfully delivered the design concept to Whirlpool through a keynote presentation, design blueprint, and digital prototypes. This concept was also exhibited at Salone del Mobile in Milan, Italy.
