My master’s thesis was developed in collaboration with HOAS, a foundation for student housing in the Helsinki region. Its title was “Nudging in Public Service Design: A Research Project of Designing a Common Laundry Room Service for HOAS.” To test my hypothesis that persuasive theories from behavioral economics can be effectively utilized in the public service design domain, I redesigned the laundry room service attached to the student housing.
Throughout the project, I conducted various design research tools, ranging from contextual and ethnographic research to prototyping and designing scenarios with a service blueprint. The entire concept was then evaluated by users and stakeholders. The evaluation results demonstrated that error rates effectively dropped, while pragmatic and hedonic qualities remained stable or were somewhat enhanced, and the user’s freedom of choice was still guaranteed. The thesis received outstanding reviews from the evaluators.
